Potential, Progress and Pride

3 Feb

2014 Presentation

There is no hiding from that warm feeling as more students start to recognise their true potential and work towards the life that they dream of. It was lovely to host an awards ceremony to acknowledge the fabulous progress of some of our students. They really take pride in their work and themselves; they will make a big difference in their communities. It was fabulous seeing their joy and the pride on the faces of their family.

Now we are focussing on driving this program out across London as even with an education system, in all honesty, it is not resourced to provide the holistic education that we offer. The cuts may have slowed down the opportunities of future generations but thankfully, they are picking themselves up and reaching for the stars. Self belief is all important; once it is found, the results are quite magical. These are our true leaders of tomorrow.

A Gift to All who don’t have it…..

A Gift to All who don't have it.....

It’s so important and already inside us all. Many don’t believe it because they can’t see or touch it but its so magical once you find it. For all my students who are just finishing their exams, go on step onto that staircase, you won’t fall. For everyone else who lives in this world of ours, it’s great if you have yours because you will know the importance of holding a child’s hand and helping them step onto the staircase too. It might take a minute but its time well spent.

I love what I do!

I love what I do!

I wake up every morning giving thanks for having the ability to do it! My books and the business are contributing to people’s lives and I am seeking ways of delivering them as widely as possible.

It was a lovely surprise to get an email yesterday that book 2 has been included on the Christian post best seller list as of yesterday.

Changing Faces

6 May

Over the last few days my mind has been quite squarely on how as a society, we do not spend the time to actually look at each other as we interact. Okay yes, it’s great that technology speeds everything up and more can be done through a computer or smart phone but I honestly believe that so much is being missed because of this. It became even clearer in an English lesson I was teaching, these kids have their exams approaching rapidly and are quite stressed. I asked a young lady to read out her answer to a question and she refused. Now I always have confidence in my students so I took her book and started to read it out. She was so upset and stood up and shouted ‘I said no! ‘ . This was new to me because we don’t have those reactions in my classroom as a norm. I asked her to step outside.

This request was not to tell her off but in that moment, when she shouted, I caught a look in her eyes and she was scared. When I took her outside of the room, I spoke to her of the need for her to have confidence in herself. It’s so important, if she has no confidence then she would struggle to get her answers down. She said she knows but was afraid of everyone laughing at her, I gave her a hug and reassured her that that would not happen because she showed courage in writing an answer. There were people in the room who had not even done that. By the end of that few minutes, it became more apparent that somehow, somewhere the emotional needs of this child had been ignored. She came back though, I even got a smile before the end of the lesson.

Perhaps there is a message in education because Anti Bullying Campaigns and policies only seem to scratch the surface of the problem. To a large extent, reporting has gotten in the way of actually getting to know students personalities, looking in their faces, helping them recognise their strengths and being proud of what they can do. That little bit of extra confidence and positivity can work wonders in their outcomes. In reality too, this will be one more adult ultimately walking tall, confident, smiling, spreading love and spreading the message to future generations that they can do anything if they do it with love and confidence.

I think that this will be my opening message in the upcoming GCSE Revision Day. Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen. Feel happy and enjoy the ride because you have it within you to achieve anything, one of the central themes of Codey Learns (www.codey-learns.co.uk). I love what we do so much. I really feel like there is nothing better than those faces on results day.

But when I think about that student this week and the tears in her eyes, I know that I will always work towards drying those tears wherever they appear. Happiness will lead to success and everyone deserves this. Everyone has a battle that we may not know about, a smile will take them one step towards winning.

See you next week ūüėÄimage

A Balancing Act

22 Apr

I have said it before, there is nothing like exam times for highlighting issues with the way people feel, think and behave. I am not a politician, nor would I even purport to understand a politicians mind but surely, like everyone else they can see that the budget will never be balanced if tomorrow’s leaders are lost.

Honestly, most of us would love to power on through every glorious day we are given and not pass any of our thoughts on to those younger than us. I am as guilty of this slip as the next person however am conscious of it and work hard on keeping my mind open to all the lovely things that happen everyday. In this way, I hope to pass a good habit on to my children and my students. No matter what happens, cuts in jobs, cold winters, rising prices, there is absolutely always something to be thankful for! Start your day as you want it to proceed , with a smile, a stretch and a big thank you!

With this habit comes belief in yourself that all things are possible. Life is great, you have it, yours is special and can be any flavour you want it to be. This is so important at exam times. Imagine the power of that feeling when sitting in the exam hall.

So now I have to name those students who have inspired me recently and believe me, this is not to take anything away from those who have inspired me along the way Ms Kenya Barnett, Mr Khaiyo Powell, Mr Noel Davies, Mr Joe Gerardo, The Amazing Mr Nathaniel Nelson-Roberts, Mr Leigh Ramsey, Mr Dwaine Roberts, The talented Ms Nadège, I could carry on and on really. Even those not here know I have pure love for them.

And to the teachers I had who taught me to love and believe, I owe them and try to give as they gave to me. Especially Ms Elaine Carabin, Ms Eileen Leatt, Mr Europe Singh.

In our minds we all have these lists. They keep a smile in my heart

What more job satisfaction!

I know it’s all been worthwhile when even the most challenging student starts to smile at their progress.
